Background
A rather large wardrobe was to be placed in a crowded room in my apartment. In the illustration below, the grey rectangle is the room, a and b represent doors, while c represent the wardrobe to be placed.
Problem
How to place a wardrobe to optimize space usage
Solution
Place the wardrobe in a way that make the areas needed for the doors to open overlap.
As nothing can be placed in the area in front of a door, this area is in a way wasted. This is true both for the doors of wardrobes and doors mounted in the walls of the room.
By placing the wardrobe in such a way that the wasted space of the doors overlap, the sum of wasted space of the room is minimized.
